Elder financial abuse is one of the types of elder abuse that sometimes occurs. Elder financial abuse can cause a great deal of harm to elderly individuals. Recently, a no contest plea was made in a case involving allegations of elder financial abuse.
The case involves a man from Ottawa, Kansas. The man reportedly held the power of attorney of an elderly woman for a period of time. The man was accused of having stolen money from the woman during this time.
Specifically, it was alleged that, while the man held the woman's power of attorney, he took over $90,000 from the woman. Allegedly, these alleged thefts occurred between 2006 and 2007.
The man faced criminal charges in connection to these allegations. According to the Lawrence Journal-World article which reported this story, the man recently submitted a no contest plea in this case. Specifically, the man pled no contest to one charge of theft and one charge of mistreatment of a dependant adult. Reportedly, this no contest plea was made as part of a plea deal that the man reached with prosecutors. According to the Lawrence Journal-World article mentioned above, the man will be sentenced in February.
No elderly individual should have to be subjected to elder financial abuse like that which was alleged in this case. Elder financial abuse can cause a great deal of harm to elderly individuals, in part because it can wrongfully deprive elderly individuals of needed financial assets. Thus, one hopes that individuals are held accountable when they commit financial abuse against an elderly individual.
